In the US surgery for a simple circumcision is a pretty quick and simple process. In honduras the chief of surgery for the bay islands told us this also. 30 minutes in and out is what we were told. Everything went fine until about 10 minutes after the surgery was done when he had a reaction to either the local pain killer or he aspirated and swallowed some of his spit into his lungs at which point he began having breathing complications. The doctors honestly really do not know what happened, but what transpired was about 3 hours of him being poked, proded and then finally cut to get a IV into his femoral artery. To say the least we were not very happy with what was going on, but at the same time its not like they told us either. The story they kept telling me was that he is in recovery, but as a parent you know something is wrong when the nurses are rushing in and out of the room. After a very very long wait (and me threating to just force my into the surgery room), another doctor finally came out and explained what happened. Jamie ended up staying in the hospital overnight and we kept sending her and Gabriel care packages because the hospitals here really do not offer much:)
He is now home and on the road to recovery it appears and I have some pics to share the experience...
This was a picture prior to him going in to the surgery. He does have a full head of hair with it going lots of different directions:)
This is Gabriel in the incubator where he was given oxygen for the time during his recovery process. He now has a great story to go with his birth. His claim to fame is that while he was being checked on later that night by the surgeon who operated he peed all over her when she had his diaper off. Thats my boy! I say what comes around goes around:)
This is the hospital room where Jamie and Gabriel stayed the night. It really is not much, but it did have A/C but no running water. Go figure... water became part of the care package.
This is his leg where he recieved three stitches. He is our first child to ever to had any type of stitches so I guess we can count ourselves as fortunate thus far. You can see in the picture that they secured his leg to a little white surgical stick so he could not move. He was definetely not a fan of the plan.
We learned a couple of valuable lesson also from this experience. The first is that no surgery here can really be that simple. The second is that medical is something that we have really took for granted throughout our entire lives. The third lesson we continue to realize is that while we have been on this island we have been watched over many many times and always can feel our heavenly father closer than at any time during our lives. He continues to bless us and watch over us each and every day.
Kendalynn and Kiah are amazing sisters. They each take turn holding the baby and lately Kiah has been trying to feed her dolls too! I let Jamie explain that one:) Kendalynn is getting ready to start the big girls school this coming tuesday. It is hard to believe that she will be in Kindergarten already. We thought it would also be good to show some of the other smiles with Gabriel. This is Bernadette, who is our mid-wife. She is/was amazing. I would highly reccommend her to anyone having a baby here on Roatan.
Here is the baby's first bath. He was not such a fan until he was actually in the water. Then I think he felt it was just like home, but with more room.
This is Makiah when the first time she was able to hold the new baby. Her response upon walking out of her bedroom and into ours was "Lem me hol my bebe broder".
This is Kenda holding baby Gabriel for the first time. Her response was a little bit different. Upon walking out of the bedroom she said "Mom what do you have in your arms?" to which we replied "its your baby brother Gabriel" at which point she asked "well how did he get there?"
